Alberta’s auditor general, Doug Wylie, has launched an investigation into the procurement and contracting processes within Alberta Health Services (AHS). This follows allegations of political interference and potential conflicts of interest reported by the Globe and Mail1. The investigation will focus on areas such as chartered surgical facilities, medication procurement (like ibuprofen and acetaminophen), and COVID-19 personal protective equipment.
The probe was initiated after Athana Mentzelopoulos, the former CEO of AHS, was terminated days before she was scheduled to meet with the auditor general to discuss her own investigation into procurement contracts. The Alberta government has stated that the personnel and board changes at AHS are part of a planned overhaul of the health-care system1.
