A majority of Albertans continue to oppose the province leaving the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) with fewer than one-in-four residents approving of leaving the federal program and creating a new provincial pension plan, according to the results of a new Leger poll.
The poll found 55 per cent of respondents were against leaving the CPP, with 23 per cent in favour of doing so, and the remaining 22 per cent stating they didn’t know enough about the issue to reply.

Support for a provincial pension plan was highest among men and in areas outside of Edmonton and Calgary. Opposition to leaving the CPP was strongest among those aged 55 years and older, with 62 per cent of that group opposed to a provincial plan.
A majority of respondents from both Edmonton (63 per cent) and Calgary (54 per cent) supported staying in the CPP compared to 48 per cent of respondents from outside the two major cities.
Those figures suggest support for establishing a pension plan has changed only slightly over the past 14 months, with more undecided Albertans deciding they do not want to leave the CPP.
On Dec. 9, 2023, Alberta pension plan public engagement panel chairman Jim Dinning estimated the feedback he had received was around 50 per cent opposed to a provincial pension plan, between 20 and 25 per cent in favour, and 25 to 30 per cent were still undecided.
