Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre will contest a by-election in Alberta’s Battle River–Crowfoot riding after MP Damien Kurek resigned. Kurek, who won re-election with more than 80% of the vote in the federal election, made the announcement so that Poilievre can return to Parliament.
Poilievre lost his long-standing Carleton seat in Ontario to Liberal candidate Bruce Fanjoy during the April 28 federal election. Even though the Conservative Party picked up seat numbers and percentage points, the Liberals, with Mark Carney leading them, gained control of Parliament. Poilievre indicated that he has every intention of staying on as party leader and is set to run in the by-election in order to take back a seat in the House of Commons.
Battle River–Crowfoot is ranked one of Canada’s safest Conservative ridings with its long history of landslide support for conservative candidates. The riding was left vacant following the recent death of MP Kevin Sorenson. Prime Minister Mark Carney has signaled that the by-election will be called quickly so that Poilievre can re-enter Parliament and resume his position as Leader of the Opposition.
