West Basin Playground Project Moves Forward After TID Amendment Approval

Milwaukee, June 18, 2026: A major step has been taken toward bringing a new playground to the West Basin public greenspace in Milwaukee’s 1st Aldermanic District after the Board of Commissioners of the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Milwaukee (RACM) approved an amendment to Tax Incremental District (TID) No. 72, also known as the Bishops Creek TID.

The amendment will help fund the construction of a multifaceted playground at West Basin, located near North 35th Street and Marion Street on the site of the former Bee Bus Lines property. Before construction can begin, the amendment must receive final approval from the Milwaukee Common Council.

The playground project is being coordinated with stormwater management and community improvement efforts led by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD). Milwaukee Parks will oversee the installation of the playground, which is expected to provide a new recreational space for residents and families while complementing environmental improvements in the area.

First District Alderwoman Andrea M. Pratt described the project as a historic public investment that transforms a former commercial-industrial property into a community asset.

“I am grateful for the great partnership on this project with MMSD, the Department of Public Works, the Department of City Development, and Milwaukee Parks,” Pratt said. “The children and families in the area will have a fantastic amenity they can enjoy for many years to come.”

In addition to the playground initiative, RACM also approved an amendment to TID No. 62, known as the DRS Power & Control Technologies TID. The amendment will support a range of roadway and pedestrian safety improvements, primarily in Milwaukee’s 1st District.

Planned upgrades include raised crosswalks along North Teutonia Avenue, roadway enhancements on Hopkins Street and other nearby corridors, as well as resurfacing and high-impact paving projects on several street segments.

Pratt welcomed the additional investment, noting that the improvements will enhance safety and infrastructure in neighborhoods that have historically seen fewer large-scale public projects.

The proposed investments are expected to improve quality of life, increase pedestrian safety, and create new recreational opportunities for residents across the district.
