The City of Edmonton has announced that Métis artist Carmen Miller will serve as the city’s next Indigenous Artist-in-Residence, continuing a program that celebrates Indigenous artists while fostering cultural understanding and community engagement. The residency is a partnership between the City of Edmonton’s Indigenous Relations Office and the Edmonton Arts Council.
Carmen Miller is a multidisciplinary Métis artist whose work explores identity, family, storytelling, and the lived experiences of Indigenous peoples. During her residency, she will create new artwork, collaborate with communities, lead public engagement activities, and mentor emerging Indigenous artists. Her work is expected to encourage dialogue about Métis culture, reconciliation, and Indigenous perspectives.
The Indigenous Artist-in-Residence program provides artists with dedicated studio space, resources, and opportunities to engage directly with Edmonton residents through workshops, exhibitions, and community events. Previous artists have included Dawn Marie Marchand, Melissa-Jo (MJ) Belcourt Moses, Matthew Wood (Creeasian), and most recently Arsene Arcand.
Edmonton’s Indigenous Artist-in-Residence initiative is designed to strengthen relationships between Indigenous communities and the broader public by highlighting Indigenous creativity, knowledge, and cultural traditions through art.
