Alberta Government Boosts Funding to Fight Organized Crime and Extortion
Edmonton, Alberta: The Government of Alberta has announced a one-time investment of $8 million to strengthen the fight against organized crime, gang violence, and extortion across the province. The funding comes as law enforcement agencies report an increase in criminal activities targeting businesses, community leaders, and families, particularly within Alberta’s South Asian community.
Public Safety and Emergency Services Minister Mike Ellis said the province is committed to protecting residents from intimidation, violence, and organized criminal networks. The new funding will help police agencies enhance investigations, improve intelligence-sharing capabilities, and acquire advanced tools needed to combat increasingly sophisticated criminal operations.
According to provincial officials, organized crime groups have been using threats, extortion schemes, arson attacks, and other forms of intimidation to pressure victims. Authorities say these crimes often involve networks operating across provincial and international borders, making investigations more complex.
