Commonwealth Stadium welcomed more than 46,000 soccer fans despite heavy rain

June 2, 2026

Despite heavy rainfall, a total of 46,164 soccer fans came out to watch the Canadian Men’s National Soccer Team win 2-0 against Uzbekistan in an international friendly match, which served as preparation for FIFA World Cup 26.

The match was an official homecoming for Alphonso Davies, captain of the Canada Men’s National team. Although he didn’t play due to an injury, he was at the Stadium and on the field to support.

Behind the scenes, another team of hundreds worked to make the match a success. The roster included over 510 security guards, 115 ushers and customer service representatives and 125 City of Edmonton event staff. Edmonton Police Service (EPS), Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) and Emergency Medical and First Aid personnel were also on-site, along with over 150 merchandise sellers and more than 800 concession and food service providers led by Stadium Foods. Edmonton Transit Peace Officers and EPS provided additional public safety measures to ensure all attendees enjoyed a safe and comfortable world-renowned soccer experience.

“Edmonton fans are truly incredible for showing up despite the weather, but we’re not surprised!” said Heather Seutter, Director, Commonwealth Stadium. “Everyone packed the stadium and cheered on the players all evening long. This energy and vibrancy is truly what makes Edmonton stand out as an incredible host city.”

The City of Edmonton and its partners offered proactive tips and timely services to ensure fans had a memorable and safe experience. Event goers were encouraged to arrive early and take public transit to get to the event, including ETS Park & Ride and LRT. Event tickets served as transit fare with attendees simply showing their valid game ticket as proof of payment when boarding any ETS bus or LRT.

The City and Commonwealth Stadium look forward to welcoming everyone for future world-class events. The next major events include the Edmonton Elks home opener on June 20, as well as the Stadium summer concerts series. For more information, visit edmonton.ca/CommonwealthEvents.
