Edmonton Transit Service has partnered with Harry Ainlay High School and Louis St. Laurent Catholic Junior/Senior High School to help build awareness of the importance of rail safety. Earlier this year, young artists from these schools submitted designs reinforcing the importance of stopping, waiting and staying vigilant around rail crossings to stay safe. Students were asked to create designs that resonate with their peers and help promote safe behaviour around trains and train crossings. The results are an array of different interpretations, displaying a range of styles. Many of these works are now displayed at LRT crossings along 111 Street at 40 Avenue, 43 Avenue and Whitemud Drive.

“It is an honour for students to see their art showcased publicly. Rail safety is an important issue, and students are using their creativity to share messages that help keep people safe around the tracks. By sharing their ideas, they are playing an important role in keeping the community safe,” said George Hoyt, Principal, Harry Ainlay High School.

“This collaboration gave students the chance to turn their ideas into public art that carries important messages about safety, care and community. It demonstrates the power of art to connect people of all ages and influence real-world choices,” said Evelyn Liesner, art teacher, Louis St. Laurent Catholic Junior/Senior High School.

ETS thanks all participating students and supporting art teachers for helping promote safe actions around train crossings.

“While rare, the most frequent collisions involve pedestrians or cyclists crossing the tracks,” said Chris Nelson, Director, LRT Operations and Maintenance. “These situations are highly preventable, and ETS sees this collaboration as a terrific opportunity to help remind students and pedestrians about proper safety precautions around the LRT.”
