Juneteenth Flag to Be Raised Above Milwaukee City Hall Ahead of Holiday Celebrations
Milwaukee, June 16, 2026 – City of Milwaukee officials will come together this week to raise the Juneteenth flag above the City Hall complex in recognition of the upcoming Juneteenth holiday.
The annual flag-raising ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, June 18, at 8:30 a.m. at the Zeidler Municipal Building, 841 N. Broadway. Media representatives and community members are invited to attend the event.
Milwaukee is home to one of the nation’s oldest and longest-running Juneteenth celebrations. Since 2020, the Juneteenth flag has been flown over the City Hall complex during the week of the holiday as a symbol of freedom, unity, and the ongoing pursuit of equality.
The ceremony will feature brief remarks from city leaders and the raising of the Juneteenth flag, marking the city’s continued commitment to honoring the significance of June 19, 1865—the day enslaved African Americans in Texas learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
City officials say the annual observance serves as an opportunity to reflect on history, celebrate cultural heritage, and recognize the progress made toward racial justice and inclusion.
