Construction Begins on 68-Unit Affordable Housing Project in Edmonton’s Kiniski Gardens

Construction has officially started on a new 68-unit affordable housing development in Kiniski Gardens, Mill Woods, bringing more affordable homes to Edmonton residents in need.

The project, led by Right at Home Housing Society, is being built on one of 11 surplus school sites designated by Edmonton City Council for affordable housing. Supported by the federal Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF), the initiative is part of a broader plan to deliver more than 1,300 new homes, including approximately 950 affordable housing units across the city.

The $23.6 million development will feature 34 three-bedroom townhomes and 34 one-bedroom units, providing housing options for families, individuals, and seniors. The community is located within walking distance of public transit, schools, parks, and the scenic Mill Creek Ravine.

Mayor Andrew Knack said the project will help address rising housing costs and improve community safety by increasing access to affordable homes.

The City of Edmonton contributed land valued at $2.5 million along with a $3.4 million construction grant through the Housing Accelerator Fund. The project has also received $5 million from Alberta’s Affordable Housing Partnership Program as part of a larger $77 million federal and provincial investment in affordable and mixed-market housing developments.

According to Right at Home Housing Society, the project is designed to strengthen the community by providing safe, affordable housing and creating long-term opportunities for families to thrive.

All affordable housing developments built on Edmonton’s surplus school sites will remain affordable for at least 40 years, ensuring long-term housing support for future generations.
