Danielle Smith Pushes Canadian Unity as Alberta Separatists Challenge Her Leadership

Danielle Smith is trying to balance two competing pressures in Alberta politics: growing separatist sentiment inside parts of her conservative base, and broader public support for remaining in Canada.

This week, Smith said she personally supports Canadian unity and would campaign for Alberta to stay in Canada, even as her government moves toward a non-binding 2026 referendum related to Alberta’s constitutional future.

The issue has intensified because separatist activists have been pushing for a formal independence referendum. A separatist petition reportedly gathered enough signatures to force political action under Alberta’s citizen initiative rules, though legal challenges have complicated the process.

Smith’s leadership is under pressure from both sides:

  • Separatists argue she is not going far enough toward Alberta independence.
  • Federalists and opposition parties accuse her of legitimizing separatism by lowering referendum thresholds and entertaining separation debates.

At the same time, Smith has been promoting a “unity” message, arguing Alberta can gain more influence within Canada through negotiations with Ottawa rather than outright separation. She pointed to recent cooperation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on energy and pipeline discussions as evidence that Alberta’s concerns are being heard.

The broader political backdrop includes:

  • Longstanding Alberta frustrations over federal environmental and energy policies.
  • Concerns about equalization payments and Ottawa’s influence over oil and gas development.
  • Rising nationalist rhetoric following constitutional disputes and economic pressures.

Despite the noise around separatism, polls and recent reporting suggest most Albertans still prefer remaining in Canada. A separate “Forever Canadian” campaign collected more than 400,000 signatures supporting Alberta staying in the federation.
